DESCRIZIONE

PROGRAM
The Neutral Mask is a leather mask designed and created by the sculptor and mask maker Amleto Sartori.
A key instrument in J. Lecoq’s pedagogy, one of the greatest minds in contemporary theatre, founder of the prestigious École Internationale du Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris, where students from all around the world travel to study as actors and performers .
The Neutral Mask is a fundamental step in the journey of Movement Based Theatre and it’s used to work on actors stage presence, but it’s also useful for anyone who wants to take a closer look at their own body in a direct and conscious way.
Themes that allow each of us to amplify our movement and motivation, to make the act of moving cleaner, to move our bodies in a larger space, and to use our bodies to their fullest physical potential.
But what does “Neutral” really mean? It doesn’t mean cold or indifferent, but lively and inquisitive. It has no psychology, no history, and no inner conflicts. It’s as if it had been created there and then and is discovering the world and its surroundings for the very first time.
This pure kind of neutrality is very hard to achieve. But what we are interested in is attempting to get as close as possible to that absolute and original idea of Neutrality.
When you work on Neutrality with the Neutral Mask, you become aware of what your physical conflicts are and you can ensure that the whole body participates fully in every action on stage.
Physical conflicts don’t just occur in the Theatre, they happen in the things we do day in, day out too, when we perform specific actions and gestures unconsciously.
Our bodies store elements of our history, they show others what we are. When we look at a body, including our own, we don’t just see flesh, hair and muscles, but we also see that person’s life story, traces of their suffering or joy, and traits that make us what we are. For example, the way we walk, how we hunch our shoulders, the interruptions in our breathing, etc.
Covering your face with the neutral mask allows you to focus on the body and your own physicality, thereby revealing something about yourself.
For an actor it’s very important to be aware of what their own personal physicality is, differentiating it from the physicality of a character that has been consciously chosen and constructed.
It covers the whole of the face, including the mouth, so speaking is not possible.
It reveals the state of calm, silence and balance that exists before the drama of the character.
By using the neutral mask we can work on rediscovering our physicality, and we do this by taking on universal themes, like The Journey of the Neutral Mask, The Farewell, The Encounter, etc.
The Neutral Mask is a powerful pedagogic instrument for Actors, Dancers, Singers, Circus Artists… It’s the basis for all theatre masks and it inspires a fascinating learning process, profoundly intimate and profoundly poetic.
